aloe vera

For those familiar with the aloe vera plant, it is popularly used in hair products our ladies use but its nutritional properties and benefits are not well known. Aloe Vera is a cellular regenerator and has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects. These properties contribute to aloe's place as one of nature's healthiest products. Aloe vera is a rich source of over two hundred naturally-occurring nutritional substances. These include twenty amino acids, nine minerals, plant sterols, monosaccharides and polysaccharides, antioxidants, vitamins, glycoproteins and other substances. Aloe vera also contains vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C. Apart from the vitamins and minerals, the aloe vera plant contains phytonutrients. Some of the minerals found in aloe vera include calcium, sodium, iron, potassium, chromium, magnesium, manganese, copper, and zinc.

Aloe vera helps support energy and overall activity levels and acts as a general tonic. Most recently, scientists are beginning to understand that Aloe vera supports healthy body collagen as well. Aloe vera has become of widespread interest to athletes, sports participants and other highly active people interested in maintaining their activity levels.

A healthy digestive tract ensures that nutrients from the foods we eat are absorbed into the blood stream. Drinking Aloe Vera regularly may improve bowel regularity and increase protein absorption, while at the same time decrease unfriendly bacteria and yeast. Aloe Vera has also shown some ability to assist in soothing heartburn and other types of digestive upset. Aloe Vera provides natural support for the immune system.  Since the immune system works around the clock protecting the body, aloe vera, with its natural immune enhancers, gives the body a continual arsenal from which to draw.

The leaves of the aloe vera plant have provided many benefits and it contains a latex substance called aloin which has laxative properties. This means unless one wants to have ‘free’ bowels, eating the raw food would produce laxative effects. To enjoy the nutritional benefits of aloe vera without its laxative effects, aloe vera has been made into drinks and juices available in some shops. Ghana has been blessed with so many foods but we have very restrictive eating habits and we should seek to experiment and try new foods.
